Near the end of the film, Kludd (who had survived falling into a forest fire during his battle with Soren) comes across Metal Beak's body and gazes down at his fallen leader's mask, possibly taking it for himself.

Kludd takes Eglantine from the family hollow (possibly whilst Noctus and Marella were out looking for him and Soren) and brought her to St. Aggie's. He listens to Metal Beak's speech and along with the rest of the Pure Ones present, chants Metal Beak's name

Later in the battle, Metal Beak battles Lyze of Kiel (now known as Ezylryb), who despite his age is able to overpower his enemy, until Nyra's arrival However, before they can kill Ezylryb, Soren arrives with a flaming branch to defeat Metal Beak to stop him destroying another owl's soul, after battling Kludd

who managed to severely injure and scar him, resulting in Surtr wearing a metal mask to cover his facial scars and going under a new name: Metal Beak Many years later, Metal Beak, alongside his wife Nyra and the rest of the Pure Ones

Sometime after this, Kludd gives Eglantine and another moon-blinked owlet to Allomere (a Guardian who is in league with the Pure Ones) to take to the Great Tree. During the battle against the Guardians and the Pure Ones, Kludd battles Soren in a forest fire and declares that the Pure Ones believed in him when no one did

Kludd tries to throw him into the fire, but the branch he is holding onto snaps, causing Kludd to fall into the flames Believing his brother to be dead, an angered Soren picks up a burning branch to go after Metal Beak to stop him

which makes Kludd reply that Soren doesn't know him at all. When launching at Soren, Kludd breaks his wing and dangles above the fire. Kludd pleads for Soren to help him, but when Soren tries to,

After being given a moonblinked Eglantine and another owlet by Kludd, Allomere returned to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree and told the Guardians the Pure Ones plan, which made the Guardians decide to fight them. However, this was part of Metal Beak's plan and when the Guardians arrived

and how Metal Beak told him that the strong would survive, the broken would be put out of their misery and that honor is just another word for weakness. Soren replies that he knows that Kludd doesn't think like that

A worried Eglantine looks on before telling Kludd that she misses their parents, to which Kludd replies that she shouldn't worry as she is with him and the Pure Ones appreciate them Eglantine pleads with Kludd to come with her to find Soren, to which Kludd (who has grown to hate Soren), tells his sister to forget about Soren

the device was activated and the Guardians were pinned to the ground with its power However, Soren and the band arrive to save the Guardians (after Eglantine revealed to him that Kludd had moonblinked her and gave her to Allomere).

to find flecks to power his device to use against the Guardians. He had made an alliance with Allomere a Guardian who had became a turnfeather for the Pure Ones as Metal Beak has promised him a portion of the owl kingdoms to rule as King if he helped them.

but find him and Gylfie being taught to fly by Grimble (an owl working for the Pure Ones in order to protect his family). Grimble pins down Nyra and tells Kludd to go home with Soren and Gylfie. Kludd once again hesitates, but after seeing Nyra struggling to breathe, declares that he is home

Seeing the group, Metal Beak believed that they were Guardians, and felt betrayed by Allomere, who was meant to bring all the Guardians Saying that there was only room for one king, Metal Beak ordered Allomere killed; the treacherous Guardian was then attacked and dragged by several bats

He longed to be appreciated and respected (which he found when joining the Pure Ones) and boasted about Tyto superiority. One day, after being taught branching by Noctus, Kludd and Soren fall from their tree (after Kludd got annoyed with Soren and shoved him for talking about his hero Lyze of Kiel)

Metal Beak's true name is revealed to be Surtr, and it is later explained that he took part in the battle of the Ice Claws along with the Pure Ones against the Guardians of Ga'Hoole. During the battle, Surtr fought and was defeated by a Guardian named Lyze of Kiel
